Parasite Prevention

Parasites including Fleas, Ticks, Heartworm & Intestinal Parasites are more than just a nuisance. They can make your pet extremely uncomfortable and cause several different types of illnesses, like flea allergy dermatitis, tick bourne diseases, heartworm disease and intestinal parasite infestations. Baseline Animal Hospital can evaluate your pet to determine the best type of prevention medication.

Stay Alert for Signs of Trouble

Make it a routine to check your pet's body for signs of flea or tick infestation. Fleas are typically black or dark brown and move rapidly through your pet's fur. Their excrement resembles small specks of pepper. Ticks resemble tiny spiders, but they have six legs. They can be quite small, but when attached to your pet, they appear like dark kernels of corn. Intestinal parasites are sometimes visible in your pet's stool, appearing as either short rice like segments or long spaghetti like worms. Other internal parasites are invisible to the naked eye, but may cause coughing or loose stools.  If you notice any of these signs of pet parasites, promptly contact us to seek treatment for your pet.

Prevent Problems at Home

When you take your dog or cat outdoors, it's advisable to comb through their fur before allowing them back inside. Part the fur to check for ticks as well. Be sure to wash your pet's blankets regularly and maintain a clean home to eliminate any flea eggs and larvae that might have found their way inside. Treatment for intestinal parasites usually requires medication, which can be obtained through us.

How Our Veterinarians Can Assist

Schedule an appointment with our veterinarians for a pet care visit. During this visit, our vet will discuss parasite prevention options for your dog or cat. Typically, this involves providing monthly medication to your pet. Flea and tick medication helps eradicate existing pests and prevent new ones from infesting your pet. This can be administered topically or as a chewable treat. Intestinal parasites also require treatment to prevent them from causing harm. Our veterinarian can provide medication to address various types of parasite infestations.
