Why Are Wellness Exams Important?

Wellness exams are vital because they allow the vet to catch potential issues before they become more serious. This enables your pet to receive proper treatment promptly and saves you money in the long run.

How Often Should My Pet Have a Wellness Exam?

Healthy adult pets should have one exam per year. Senior pets may need two or more check-ups depending on breed, exact age, and pre-existing conditions. Puppies and kittens will need to be seen every 3–4 weeks beginning at around 6 weeks of age, until they reach 16–20 weeks of age.

What Happens At a Wellness Exam?

Your pet's wellness exam will typically begin with a weight and vital signs check by a vet technician. The vet will then check the following:

  •   Heart and lungs
  •   Nails and paws
  •   Skin and coat
  •   Gait, stance, and reflexes
  •   Eyes, ears, and nose
  •   Teeth and gums
  •   Abdomen

Additionally, they will likely take a urine and fecal sample and draw blood (to test for Heartworm). You can also expect your pet to receive any needed vaccinations at their exam. The vet will also consult with you about flea and tick prevention, spaying/neutering, general behavior, diet and exercise, and microchipping.
